This guide shows you how to find information in the library about saving money by living more thriftly. If you need assistance, please feel free to ask the library staff or e-mail ask@pamunkeylibrary.org.
1.What key words will help me find information about thrifty living?
Unfortunately, there is no subject heading in the library catalog for "thrifty tips" or "Money saving advice". Books on saving money can be found in broader subjects, some of which are listed below.
To find books that can be checked out, choose the SUBJECT search in the online catalog, and type (one at a time) these subjects:
Think outside the box as well. Want to find tips on saving money on a wedding? Do a subject search for "weddings" and scan through the titles. Also, many craft books and cookbooks are about saving money. Try doing an Advanced Search in PamCat combining keywords with subjects. For instance, if you want books on low-cost recipes, try doing a advanced search with "Cookery" in the subject field and "Budget" in the words or phrase field.
2.Where can I find print resources on the Thrifty Living in the library?
Since there isn't one definitive subject phrase for thrifty living, books will be sprinkled throughout the nonfiction section of the library. For this reason, using PamCat is essential for finding resources on this topic in the library. Don't hesitate to ask for help from the library staff if you aren't finding what you need.
Titles on this subject will be in our circulating collection, but there are a couple of titles in our Reference section that might be helpful:
3.What are some good internet sites about thrify living?
One place you should check out is our Electronic Resources page. We offer online reference resources that include newspaper and Magazine articles in the General Reference category. Most of these are available to you at home. If you are logging in from outside the library, you will need your library card number, which you will find on the back of your library card.
In addition to the resources the library provides, there are a variety of excellent websites that include information on this topic, such as:
SundaySaver has access to sale circulars for retail stores. Use it to find deals from home before driving to the store.
Virginia Cooperative Extension Based at VA Tech and Virginia State University, this website is chock full of sound advice. Topics such as budgeting, preparing healthy low-cost meals, and growing your own vegetables are all from a reliable source. Check out Family Financial Management and Community Food Systems publications.
Fuel Economy Created and maintained by the United States Department of Energy. Learn ways to stretch your fuel budget.
Search the web sites listed above at the same time with our new Google Search box.
You may also want to check out the resources at the Internet Public Library. These websites will provide you with reliable information.
As always, please feel free to ask a Library Staff member, or email us at Ask a Librarian!
